St. Augustine: the manicured look
St. Augustine is the thick, dense, deep-green lawn most homeowners picture when they think of a Florida yard. It handles shade far better than Bahia, which makes it the right call for properties with mature trees or partially shaded front yards. The trade-off is that it needs more water, more fertilizer and closer attention to pests like chinch bugs.
Bahia: the low-maintenance workhorse
Bahia is coarser and less uniform, but it's tough — it tolerates drought, poor soil and full sun far better than St. Augustine, and it needs less fertilizer to stay healthy. For larger open properties, HOA-adjacent yards without much shade, or anyone who wants a lawn that forgives a missed watering, Bahia is usually the more practical choice.
What actually decides it
Sun exposure and how much upkeep you want are the two real deciding factors — not personal preference alone. A shaded lot planted in Bahia will thin out fast, and a full-sun property in St. Augustine will demand more water and care than most homeowners expect.
